Edvard Weie
The Nature of Poetry

1.-3. sal
07. February - 03. May 2015

Edvard Weie. The Nature of Poetry celebrates the 100-year anniversary of Edvard Weie’s (1879-1943) first solo exhibition at Kunstforeningen GL STRAND in 1915. Today considered one of Denmark’s great modernists, Weie’s importance continues to grow and his work is well represented in many Danish and Nordic museums.

Edvard Weie. The Nature of Poetry offers its viewers a unique and intense poetic experience of more than 70 works by Weie – works which are otherwise only accessible in private collections. Through this multitude of works, the exhibition lets its viewers follow the artist and his development: from his early atmospheric interior compositions and Christianshavn-motifs, to his last big Romantic work, Faun og nymfe, from the 1940s. In this way, the exhibition reflects the great variety of Weie’s oeuvre, while also managing to give its viewers a more focused insight into his mature, coloristic post-1920 works.

A great colourist and one of the most significant Danish modernists, Weie is known for his uncompromising, innovative and highly confident use of colour and way of simplifying forms. He painted the modern life of the Copenhagen coastal park Langelinje in bright colours; poetic arrangements of everyday objects, romantic-musical compositions with figures, and he even interpreted the unspoiled landscape of Christiansø as a Paradise lost. Weie was not interested in painterly innovation  for the sake of mere innovation, but had more far-reaching ambitions: that art would express a poetic approach to life and would function as an almost spiritual guide for society. Thus, Weie based his Romantic perception of art on theories of colour tones and on painting’s ability to transform nature and existential themes into something poetic.

The exhibition is curated by dr.phil. Lennart Gottlieb.
